During our poetry unit, we had the privilege to collaborate with graphic design students from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Each graphic designer set out to design forms and distribute our poems in unique ways that addressed the central message of each poem. Below you can see my poem’s design by Kailey. Enjoy!

Previous Publishings

As a class we recently finished reading the Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor. This book tells the story of a Black family during the 1950’s during the civil rights movement. These diaries were written by students from the perspective of one member of this family, either ‘lois, the youngest daughter, father, or mother as the family faces discrimination, segregation, and racism.

One day I woke up like at 8:30. I went to the bathroom and brush my teeth the tooth paste was crest 3d white and i put my sandals and went down stairs and i saw my dad i said “good morning!” and he bought bagel and donuts muffin for him and I hug my dad and i saw my favorite donuts. I was happy my dad bought dunkin donuts then i said where tode sta mami”in english i said where is mommy my dad said she is sleeping i said okay.

Next I went to my parent room and i saw my mom on her phone and i said good morning i said why are u not down stairs when u are on your phone watching netflix I said whatever i went downstairs and i said she is on her phone then i just went on my ipad i was watching tik tok and it was 10:10 and my sister and mom woke up and they brush their teeth and they went downstairs and they said good morning and my mom and we ate breakfast i said i am going to sleep in the couch a little bit and i did i woke up and it was 11:00 i was happy to go i clap my hand cause of joy i got dress up i put jeans .Zippppp that was my jeans i were my new jeans was rip and my new shirt” and i was ready and we were all ready and we drove to my god brother house i went up stairs and i sit on the couch it was a hot day i went to the codsherner and it was fresh and my god brother dad said please do the food and my god brother mom said please cut the vegetable and every one said okay and my god parent left i got to see my god brother he is a baby and he were all white and more people came and we did things we are supposed to do the lady said please i can tell u are hungry and my dad said do u guys have salt and they did we started laughing because there was salt in the cow and this old man said u want water or soda and he put some soda and water and i got soda cause i like the soda a lot

And i went outside were my parents are and i asked my dad if i can use his phone he said yes I was so bored i don’t have wifi so i just said to my sister i have no wifi to download that he said go to settings and turn on the app and turn on the cellular and she said just download and when u are done turn off the app and the cellular and she said done u have it i was not patient and it took forever and I went down stairs and i said to my mom hi and my dad said do to be to loud because there are people here i said my dad. Then I went upstairs then my god parent was here i said hi then i went down stairs and stood outside it was raining then it stop and i was playing a game in my dad phone and my game was done downloading and i started to do the level 1 then 2 then 3 and i was bored so the food was done and my mom said go called your sister i said okay i said “ jessica tomasa junior mommy said to come downstairs and eat they said okay then we went to the table the food was rice pork chicken and i ate a little bit cause I always eat a little bit and my mom said if u are full then give to me i said ok i gave her and I ask my mom if i can get more strawberry she said I don’t know where they put it I said okay and I to the fringe and got the biggest strawberry not that big and i ate it then I went to the bathroom and I wash my hand cause my hand is so greasy and we went the living room and we started to play on the phone and my sister phone was about to die and my sister asked people and i went down stairs and there was chocolate strawberry and i took a lot and i ate it upstairs and ran and I finish and they put it away and idk means I don’t know where she put it and i found it it was a frig and i tell my sister and i went downstairs and i saw corn and i was so happy corn is my favorite and i asked my dad if i can get a corn he said wait its hot and u ate I said okay and started to play a game and i said can I eat now “ he said ya i said yay in a happy voice and i ate another one and i ate 2 my sister got one she did not like it so she gave it to me I ate she said there are black stuff in your teeth i said okay and wash my teeth by water than i ran down stairs and i saw my dad carrying my god brother than he give it to my sister and then he said who did not carry the baby my god brother i said me and he started looking at me when i was caring him than i gave it to my brother.THE END.

When i forgot the salt!!!!!

First I went to the bathroom and I brush my teeth and my tooth paste is Crest 3D white “when I was done brushing my teeth.The mouth wash was listerrine freshburst” put mouth wash and I put the in my cup and I put it in my mouth and I was tearing and the mouth wash’ was minty and I was screaming Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh “and I spit it out and i turn off the light and I ran down stairs”. Next i went to the kitchen and I went to the fridge and looking for food’ so I said oh ya I haven’t ate eggs so I grab the eggs and I grab them and crush And I put them in the bow and I mixed them and turn on the stove.Then i put oil so my eggs don’t be stuck in the pan and I put a little so I don’t waste the oil and I put the eggs”

and put it on the pan and I thought I was forgetting something but I was but I forgot about the salt so all I hear is Ssss! it was the eggs so I just ignore it and flip and it was done .Last I turn off the stove and got my plate and got my egg and I got ketchup and I tuck the egg and got a peace and try it I did not taste the salt and I and the eggs smell like it has salt in the eggs and it saw like it has no salt in it and when I ate the eggs I felt like I was going to throw up 🤮🤢 and then i went to the fridge and got some water and I felt good and and I went on my iPad and play games in my iPad” .
