Hi Families!

We just finished our first week back of hybrid learning (in-person and remote)! This week we reflected on all that we have learned up to this point, we reviewed our writing portfolios and shared our favorite memories. We encourage you to sit down with your scholar and check out their writing portfolio on our class website: https://www.admwriters.com/. You can even leave a comment on their poetry.

Also, we began reading our new book Wonder. Ask your scholar what we have learned so far about the main character August. Additionally, as a third-grade cohort a major focus for the rest of the year is "choose kind." Ask your scholar about what this means and if they have earned any kindness links.

Finally, if you have already signed up for an interview with Ms. Shimizu, thank you! If you have not, but would like to share your thoughts on this school year you can sign up at this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040e49ada62ca1fc1-interview

Have a great spring break!

¡Hola familias!

Además, comenzamos a leer nuestro nuevo libro Wonder.

For the past two weeks, we have been reading The Gold Cadillac by Mildred Taylor. We have been exploring and discussing issues surrounding racism and discrimination. In writing, scholars worked in groups to write diary entries from the point of view of one of the main characters. Groups also had the opportunity to role-play based on how the characters would reflect on the events in the story in the year 2021. Take a look at the amazing work on our class website. You can even share it with family members and leave compliments for the writers.

Dear Families,

This week has been our most exciting week as authors because we had our very first publishing party! Scholars came in their finest to share their stories on the stage with their classmates and special guests. Don't worry if you couldn't make it, because you can always check your scholar's writing on this website. Just click on your scholar's homeroom (FPU or URI) from the homepage or dropdown menu, find your scholar's name, click, and you will arrive at their writing portfolio where you can see their most recent writing AND even leave comments for them. You can even share the link with family members and friends who live far away, but want to read your scholar's writing! In reading this week we started Roald Dahl’s book, The Twits. This weekend, you can ask your scholar what are some character traits of Mr. and Mrs. Twit? What are some of the tricks Mr. and Mrs. Twit play on one another? Why do you think the monkeys and birds want revenge on the Twits?

Queridas familias,

10/2/20

Dear Families,

This has been an exciting week in our Humanities class. In writing, we have all selected which story we want to publish next week. You can ask your scholar: What is the heart of your story? Then, by next week, you will be able to read your scholar's writing on this website! We are all so excited!!! In reading, we read The Enormous Crocodile by Roald Dahl. We learned about character traits and how they influence the sequence of events in a story. Over the weekend, you can ask your scholar about the different character traits of the Enormous Crocodile, Humpy-Rumpy, Trunky, Muggle-Wump, and the Roly-Poly Bird. You can also ask your scholar what were the Enormous Crocodile’s clever and sneaky tricks and what happened to him at the end of the story. Finally, this weekend, your scholar can continue to practice their typing skills on Typing.com.

Thank you families for all you do!

Queridas familias,

Dear Families,

This has been a great week of writing and getting to know each other as a class. Ask your scholar about which kind of writing voices is more interesting and why: a news reporter voice and a storytelling voice? You can also have your scholar open their online journal and show you all of their story ideas and writing so far! If you have extra time, you can even have them practice their typing skills on typing.com. Once again, all of this would not be possible without your support. Thanks so much! Have a great weekend!

Queridas familias,

¡Muchas gracias! ¡Ten un excelente fin de semana!

Third-Grade Families,

Congratulations to you and your scholar for making it through week one of third grade! This week we learned how to open up our online writing journals from google classroom. Every scholar decorated their journal with images that were meaningful to them. It was great to learn about each other. Also, each scholar set a resolution (goal) for their writing this year. Ask your scholar to show you their online journal and tell you about their entries so far! Finally, ask your scholar about the Notebook Game! They may have some interesting questions for you to answer. We can't wait to hear your answers to their questions on Monday. Again, thank you so much for your support and patience throughout this new learning process. We could not do it without you!
