During our poetry unit, we had the privilege to collaborate with graphic design students from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Each graphic designer set out to design forms and distribute our poems in unique ways that addressed the central message of each poem. Below you can see my poem’s design by Madeline. Enjoy!

As a class we recently finished reading the Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor. This book tells the story of a Black family during the 1950’s during the civil rights movement. These diaries were written by students from the perspective of one member of this family, either ‘lois, the youngest daughter, father, or mother as the family faces discrimination, segregation, and racism.

I moved but I still miss my old house  because I had so many memories that will stay with me.  Let me tell you the story of  when I got a new house.

One day, my step dad told me, “we are going to the park with your brothers”. After the park, we went to the new house. I asked my mom “where are we?”

She replied, “we are at the new house!”

I told her, “no, I don’t want to move!”

She told me,  “yes, now stop playing with my phone.”

I told her, “give it back.”

She said, “Go inside or no phone.”

“Fine”, I said back and I walked into the new house. I went to Spain last summer to visit my family. I went with my grandpa, grandma, and my older brother. It was my baby cousin’s birthday, her name is Briana. At the party, we played games and ate vanilla and chocolate cake. The next day my grandpa said, “we have to leave and go back home to America”, I was sad. I wanted to stay but I had to go back to my mom in America. I packed my toys and clothes into my blue suitcase. Me, my grandpa, grandma, and my big brother all got into an Uber to the airport. When we got to the airport, my cousin helped me carry my bags in. Then it was time to say goodbye. My cousin and I hugged and I could feel the tears coming in my eyes. I didn’t want to leave my cousin, we are best friends. My grandpa called to me,”Beve, come on!” Then we said our final goodbye and I walked onto the plane. I looked back at my cousin and saw them waving goodbye. I sat in my seat, buckled my seatbelt and hugged my Picachu stuffed animal. I fell asleep on the plane. When I woke up I was back in America. It was the best summer you could have. We are waiting till Covid is done to see each other again. I miss my cousin and my baby cousin. I hope I see them again.
