During our poetry unit, we had the privilege to collaborate with graphic design students from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Each graphic designer set out to design forms and distribute our poems in unique ways that addressed the central message of each poem. Below you can see my poem’s design by Michael. Enjoy!

As a class we recently finished reading the Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor. This book tells the story of a Black family during the 1950’s during the civil rights movement. These diaries were written by students from the perspective of one member of this family, either ‘lois, the youngest daughter, father, or mother as the family faces discrimination, segregation, and racism.

Family Day with my mom, my  brother, and myself

My family went to Sonic in Swansea. That day was very important to me because my brother came home. He doesn't live at home with me so we don’t get to spend much time together. We got in the car and we drove to Swansea.

When we got to Sonic we went to the drive in part.We got to look at the menu and take our time without anyone rushing us! When we were ready we pushed the red button and we placed our order.

While we were waiting for our order we made up jokes and were talking to each other and we listened to music.I thought to myself Wow this is really fun I’m glad I asked to come here.

Our waitress brought our food to us and she had on roller skates.I got a junior bacon burger, some tater tots and m&m blast ice cream.

My mom got a strawberry shortcake milkshake. My brother got a peanut butter oreo milkshake.

“Slurp” went my brother as he drank his thick milkshake. My mom thought hers was the best but I thought my brothers were the best.

At the end of the meal my mom said”Yuck Jadin your milkshake is too sweet.”

But I said, “Jadin your milkshake is really good.” My brother said “ Your ice cream is good Christina.” I talked all the way home to my brother and I told jokes and we played the game I spy.

The milkshakes were really good but spending time with my brother was even better.

One day my mom told me that my nana was coming  from Kentucky for Thanksgiving  dinner. I was so excited. When my nana came over she stayed in my bedroom. When I heard that I was really excited.Thanksgiving morning my nana got up early and started cooking. My nana and I cooked the sweet potatoes with marshmallows in it.I was too young to use the potato peeler so my nana peeled the sweet potatoes.  Then I smashed the sweet potatoes. When my nana was done cooking My aunt, my cousin, and his parents came over.I couldn't wait to eat because it smelled so good.Me and my cousin played with my cutie cars until It was time to eat dinner. After dinner we had dessert. Then my cousin and I went into my room to play. Then my cousin left.
