During our poetry unit, we had the privilege to collaborate with graphic design students from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Each graphic designer set out to design forms and distribute our poems in unique ways that addressed the central message of each poem. Below you can see my poem’s design by Tanner. Enjoy!

As a class we recently finished reading the Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor. This book tells the story of a Black family during the 1950’s during the civil rights movement. These diaries were written by students from the perspective of one member of this family, either ‘lois, the youngest daughter, father, or mother as the family faces discrimination, segregation, and racism. 

Unicorn birthday         

“Ring Ring”the telephone rang and when I picked it up my

 mom said “I’m coming to get you! When my mom called and said that I could almost scream.

It was the day of my birthday and I was at my nana’s house. It was also really cold outside.

Me and my mom went to my gymnastics. My coach was there at the gym but no one else was there yet.

Then we got set up for the birthday party before anyone was there. My coach and my mom decorated the tables and the inside and we decorated everything with unicorns.

Then some people started to come in the gym.The  gymnastics flooded with people who came in the gym.Once everybody was there me and my cousins and friends and family started to play.It was open gym so you could do anything you want.The kids could go on the bars and the beams and the flor and the tumble track.It also would of been spooky if my coach didn”t turn the lights on but luckily he did.People were swinging on the bars and walking on the beams and jumping on the tumble track.Also,me and my friends that were in my level and actually did gymnastics showed all the kids and parents are routines. All my friends were in level 3. 

Then in about an our we went to the party tables and we had the cake.The cake had unicorns on it and it was ice cream cake.Then all my friends and cousins and family sang happy birthday and I was so excited to eat my cake.After my friends and family and cousins sang to me we all ate some cake.The cake was delicious and we also had ice cream with are cake.The cake had vanilla icing  on the on the top. The cake was soooooooooooooooooo good.The flavor of the cake was vanilla because vanilla cake is my favorite.This is the best birthday i've had when I turned 6.My birthday was the best because everyone there made me feel special.  

   The Disappearing Monkey Blanket

              It was a sunshiny day when I brought my favorite  blanket to the zoo. Which is   my monkey blanket. That smelt like “detergent!”. Because “I washed my blanket!” before I went to the zoo.I walked into the zoo. And I was so excited. And it smelt nasty. Because of all the animals. I was jumping up and down and I was screaming like “ahhhhhhh.” Then I saw all the beautiful animals when I walked inside and I saw animals like birds and lions and tigers. And seals and otters.I was with my mom my dad and my brother.This was when I was little so I was very small.I loved what the zoo looked like. When I was little.Then I was looking at some monkeys and then I looked away for a second and my monkey blanket was gone.Then “I saw a bald eagle flying away with my monkey!” blanket.I was “screaming”! at the top of my lungs. Like “AHHHHHHHHHHH!”.”I hated that day!” when I was little.At that very moment I was mad and sad. Because that bold eagle took my favorite blanket.I realized it was gone when I turned back. From looking at the monkeys and looking at my hand and my blanket was gone.When I was crying my parents said it's ok will buy you a new blanket.We left the zoo because I was crying. So then I left the zoo and went in the car and I was really sad.Then me and my parents went to Target and I saw a new blanket. That I loved.That blanket that I liked was of a bunny.It was very soft and cuddly. Like my monkey blanket.So I loved my new blanket. And slept with it every night.
