During our poetry unit, we had the privilege to collaborate with graphic design students from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Each graphic designer set out to design forms and distribute our poems in unique ways that addressed the central message of each poem. Below you can see my poem’s design by Madeline. Enjoy!

As a class we recently finished reading the Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor. This book tells the story of a Black family during the 1950’s during the civil rights movement. These diaries were written by students from the perspective of one member of this family, either ‘lois, the youngest daughter, father, or mother as the family faces discrimination, segregation, and racism.

On a Thursday night I was scared . Read to find out why! Enjoy!

On the night before my dance recital I was so scared. I thought  I was going to do so bad. I had to go to bed because it was a school day. Then I woke up. It was Friday. That ment my dance recital was today. I was happy now since it got closer and closer to when I had to go to recitail.

Then as soon as I knew it was time to go home. My mom straightened my hair and curled it. Then my mom put lipstick on then eyeshadow a little eyeliner     and blush. My mom and I were watching TV when she did my hair. When she did my makeup it was in the bathroom so all we really said was when she told me she had to fix the makeup.

Then we went outside and it was pouring rain.I was so mad because my hair would be curly again if it got wet but luckily I had a raincoat. Then it stopped raining.

We went to dunkin so my mom could get a coffee. In the line for dunkin I saw my dance friend. She was ready for the recital  because we are in the same class. So we finally got there. It was at Apponequet high school.

My friends were there. We went next to the fan but when we did that our CURLS fell out.  I was so mad because they fell out every time I moved. So we did them again. There were 6 of us including me. “WHY DO MY CURLS KEEP FALLING OUT”! It was time for us to do our jazz dance. We did so good.

The next dance was our hip hop dance. We did so GOOD in that dance too because we did not do bad!

Then it was our tap dance. We all thought it was so hard but we had to do it so we went on stage. I was doing so good but then I  FORGOT a move! I was so stressed when we got off stage I was crying. I thought people would notice that I messed up. But then I got to see the people who were watching me! They said they did not notice I messed up.

So then I went home and fell asleep.

Then the next day I had to do the dances again so the rest of the people who wanted to come could go. That is the day where my titia, my dad, my grandpa, my grandmother and my vavo came. So we went there again.

We got ready to do our jazz dance. Then we went on to  the stage. We did SO GOOD.

So then we got ready to do our hip hop dance. We went on stage. WE did GOOD again.

Now it is our tap dance. We went on stage. We did good but……… the suspenders kept on falling off.  I was upset about that because I just don't think that dance likes me! “ Why does that dance always do something to just ME”?

I got to see my family. My vavo got me a unicorn plushie. My vavo went  to my house. I took off my makeup but not all of it. Then I took off my costume.

Later we went to Olive garden in taunton. Then we went back to my house. It was THUNDERING. Then I watched tv. I was sad because my vavo had to leave.

So I had to go to bed. I played with my stuffed animals so I could fall asleep. I was thinking about which my  favorite dance was .

It  was hip hop. I chose hip hop because I don't like slow moves or fast moves. It was right in the middle. The hardest dance was tap because the moves were so FAST!

Even though there were so many challenges on the day of my recital, I still loved every minute of it! No matter how hard it is, I love dance!

ADENOIDS!

One day my mom said I needed to get my adenoids taken out. I was scared because that meant I needed to have surgery. I was crying like a baby. We had to go to Boston because that is where the hospital is. We went to the Boston cheesecake factory. We could not go to the Providence one because the surgery was in Boston and the hotel was there and it would be a LONG drive. If we did it would be a long drive to Providence to Boston. There was a wait but not for long. I got chicken with a fruit salad. The cheesecakes looked so good but they did not have the one I like so I did not get it. Our waiter was nice. I can't remember if it was a boy or a girl so I said waiter. When my mom told me we were going there I said yum! We finally got to the hotel. Then we went to bed. In the morning we went to the indoor pool. We jammed to music since nobody was there except me and my mom went to the pool. Then we got back to the hotel room. I took a shower then my mom wanted food but I could  not eat food or drink until the surgery was done. So she did not eat because she did not want me to be jealous then we went to the hospital. We went to the Boston children's hospital.I  was so scared. My parents could not go in the room with me. I felt braver as I went in.  They gave me an anesthesia flavor that smells like grape lollipop Even though it didn't but anyways I had to lose teeth before the surgery. And when the surgery was done she said do you notice something different .I said no. And then I said wait. My front teeth are gone! I shouted I got five dollars from the tooth fairy.  The doctors were so nice.  When I went in for the surgery I  heard beeping sounds all around me. After the surgery I did not feel good. I was dizzy.  I had lots of popsicles before I left. I got sick on the way home. But after that I was fine. I talked weirdly. I sounded like a stuffy two year old. It was cute but I was 6 years old. When my mom came home she got me a toy for being so brave. My grandparents came. Then I barely ate. And I fell asleep. In the morning I got more money from the tooth fairy. Then on the next day I made a gingerbread house since it was November. My cousins  and their mom and mom came. Me and my cousin said mhm smells so good. My other cousin was a baby so she couldn't talk. And I could finally eat breakfast so  I went to Dunkin and got  a donut then I went to dance. And I was fine. I just had to go easy with dance.  My friends were so CONFUSED of what i was saying since i did not have my front teeth, they were GONE they fell out in the surgery.
