During our poetry unit, we had the privilege to collaborate with graphic design students from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Each graphic designer set out to design forms and distribute our poems in unique ways that addressed the central message of each poem. Below you can see my poem’s design by SarahCatherine. Enjoy!

As a class we recently finished reading the Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor. This book tells the story of a Black family during the 1950’s during the civil rights movement. These diaries were written by students from the perspective of one member of this family, either ‘lois, the youngest daughter, father, or mother as the family faces discrimination, segregation, and racism.

When I was 3 I was so excited to go to Brazil with my mom. I never imagined that when I got back home I was going to get the saddest news ever. I left my poodle dog with my dad when she was a puppy.  One day my dad was going outside and he told her to stay. And he let the door a little open and she  got her nal and opened the door and whet outside and my dad did not see her .

Because he was in the backyard fixing stuff, And she was too low and she went  to the road and iI had a neighbor and she couldn't see my dog and Just rolled over on her neck. She didn't stop the car to say she was sorry for doing it and just drove away. Since that day she still hasn't said  sorry.   I cried so much when I heard that sad news. My dad told me that he bared her in our other house that we have.

I still miss her today  but I know she is in God's hands. I cry everyday because of her.  I really miss  her. I hope she is having fun in heaven.I believe she is in good hands i love her so much

THE  DEVASTATING  FELLING !!!!!!!!!!!

One day my cat left my house when my dad opened the door to bring the groceries inside.

He was waiting at the stairs when he saw my daddy coming in, then he went down the stairs really fast and ran out the door before my daddy had the chance to close it.   My daddy went to try to get him back, but Brilho, (this is his name), was faster than him.I felt devastated as never before.  I was really mad at my dad, because he had already done the same with my dog that I loved when she got killed on my street. Also he didn't even tell me right away, because I was sleeping. He said he didn't want to wake me up.

The next day, I woke up, and  as usual I looked for Brilho everywhere he used to hide, then my daddy told me what happened. He said Brilho ran away the night before.  At that moment my heart was pounding so fast. I asked my Daddy to help me find him. Daddy said that we won't find him because that was true. He had run away for real. I cried and said that was not true, because  daddy always jokes around.  My mom and I looked for him around the house. Once more Daddy said. “ He is not here, you will not find him”. I started to cry so much. Mom embraced me trying to comfort me.  For two days, I prayed all day for him to come back home. The two nights that he wasn't home, I was so worried where he could be. Then on the third day that he ran away, I woke up thinking about him, when I was using the bathroom I heard meeeow. I yelled to my mom that was still sleeping; “Mom Brilho is back!”. I ran down the stars in the backyard where I saw Brilho  running up the stars.  I grabbed him in my arms and  then we went into the house .

When I put him down, he ran to his food looking like he was very hungry. I guess he didn't eat anything when he was out. After he ate and drank a lot of water I grabbed him and we laid down in my bed and my heart rejoiced for having him back.  I thanked the Lord for bringing him back and asked Him to never let him run away again.
